Meet NAWBO San Antonio. The National Association of Women Business Owners’ San Antonio chapter has been one of the most distinguished organizations in our city for more than a decade with nearly 150 members. Its vision is to provide members with forums to help strengthen leadership skills and cultivate wealth-creating capacity to grow their businesses and propel these entrepreneurs into economic, social, and political spheres of influence among peers not only in San Antonio, Texas but across the nation.
The San Antonio chapter is one of only two chapters receiving a nationwide Gold Award for “best practices” in membership, succession planning, corporate partner support, and involvement from the National Association. Its main goal is to create innovative and effective changes in the business culture by building strategic alliances, coalitions, and affiliations in the promotion of the economic development and transformation of public policies for the interest of women business owners.
“According to a recent survey, 88 percent of NAWBO San Antonio members have 51 percent or greater ownership in their business, 22 percent have between $1 million and $5 million in revenue and 66 percent are certified as WBE and SBE.” NAWBO San Antonio
NAWBO San Antonio’s programs include: building relationships among clients, customers, and referral sources; bridging businesses by increasing visibility through business listings; increasing awareness of national issues affecting women business owners throughout the nation; and helping other business owners and would-be entrepreneurs through mentoring and advocacy programs in the procurement process for government entities and Public Policy Forums.
The group is also actively creating the next generation of women entrepreneurs through An Income of Her Own (AIOHO®), a nonprofit student mentoring program for female high school students. Designed to encourage students to stay in school and see business ownership as a viable career choice, AIOHO awards more than $20,000 in scholarships to participating students. The 2010 scholarship awards luncheon is on April 9 and is open to the public. Women business owners who have sponsored AIOHO events this year include Beth Coyle, CEO of Coyle Engineering Inc.; Katherine Shields, a McDonald's franchise owner; Blanca Welborn, owner of Med-National Inc.; and Madeline Anz Slay, president of Madeline Anz Slay Architecture, PLLC.
