Craft business idea: Sell dried flowers

If you are crafty and are looking for a way to earn a few extra dollars you should consider drying flowers and selling them! You can sell them to local craft stores, to your crafty friends, to people who make and sell gift baskets (contact them online!) and if you have a flea market near your area you can sell your dried flowers there!

You can dry just about any type of flower. Some flower heads take longer to dry than others so it's best to dry groups of the same kind.  Start by sorting your flowers into groups.  Then gather a small group of 5 to 10 matching flowers (or similar) and tie the stems together. You want to tie the stems loose enough to let air flow between the stems but just tight enough to hold the flowers together.

One you have tied your groups of flowers you need to hang them upside down in a dark, dry area. Most people like to hang their flowers in the cellar. But this is only a good option if your cellar is not moist or humid. An attic is usually a good, dry location to dry flowers.  If you don't have an attic or a dry cellar you can hang the flowers in a closet. However, you will need to hang them so that they do not get disturbed so pick a closet that has a space above your clothing where they will not get pushed around.

One you find a place to hang your flowers simply hang them upside down and leave them alone for about 4 weeks. Smaller, dainty flowers may dry quicker. Larger, full head flowers may take a bit longer. It really depends on how dry the conditions are and how fresh the flowers are. Older flowers will dry quicker but fresh cut flowers, although they take longer to dry, will better maintain their original colors. So if keeping the color is important to you it's best to use very fresh flowers.

Once you see how easy it is to dry flowers you will soon be looking for all types of flowers to dry. Ask your local florist or grocery store (many grocery stores have floral departments) if you can buy old flowers for a discount that they would normally throw out. You may even be able to get them for free!

You may want to look around your own yard for unusual wild flowers. Also look for greens or branches with berries. They look wonderful in dry flower arrangements and you can dry them the same way. Greens sell especially well around the holidays.
