There is a gag in which a movie director tells a starlet how to play her scene. The starlet asks, "What's my motivation?" - wanting to know why her character is doing what she's doing in order to play her scene well.
"What's my motivation?" is also a good question for women to ask when they're starting out in business or even if they've been in business for a while. Answering this question may save them from many headaches down the road.
Nada Jones of the entrepreneurial website Live the Dream by Nada Jones suggests that women answer the childhood question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" by asking themselves these questions: "What are the things that make you happy, make you smile? And who are the people you want to serve?"
Jones also says that women in business should ask themselves three other crucial questions: "Who do want to be working with? What surroundings do you want to be working in? And how much time do you want to give your business every week?" She tells of a fashion designer she knows who always dreamed of jet-setting, runway shows and sumptuous fabric--then found that most of her time was spent dealing with buyers, invoices and accounts receivable. It was unexpected and discouraging.
When women thinking about going into business take the time to ask themselves the five questions and answer them honestly, especially the one about whom they want to serve, it will help them anticipate and overcome the inevitable bumps along the way.
