Less than a couple miles from the walled city, San Gimignano, wine travelers can visit Azienda Agricola Panizzi. The road to the winery can be difficult to find, however it is the road attached to the exit of the parking area nearest the main entrance to San Gimignano.
Giovanni Panizzi bought the farmland in 1979 and planted vineyards. He did not bottle his first wine until 1989. Now with 30 hectares (about 75 acres) Panizzi produces about 17,000 cases of wine. More than half of the wine is exported to the United States, Canada, Brazil and Europe.
The tasting room facility has two tasting rooms. The larger area can hold eight to ten people while the smaller is in the wine library and comfortably sits four people. German Spiegelau wineglasses are used for wine tastings and add to the ambiance in this smaller tasting room. Expect to taste several wines made from the Vernaccia grape. The white grape is the main grape planted in the San Gimignano region. In addition to Vernaccia, Azienda Agricola Panizzi also produces a Chianti and a blend including Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
As you travel to wineries enjoy the countryside, drive slower and carefully take in the photogenic views.
