June has been a great month for Church and State Wines. On June 4th, proprietor Kim Pullen opened a new winery located next to the Coyote Bowl vineyard, on the renowned Black Sage bench. Three weeks later, he got to announce two Church and State wines had won awards at the San Francisco International Wine Competition.
Since opening its first winery on Brentwood Bay in 2004, Church and State has been sourcing grapes from the Okanagan. In 2009, production moved to the Coyote Bowl and now a tasting room and two patios have opened to the public.
The gorgeous views are to be complemented by live jazz later in the summer, the details of which are to be announced soon. The new winery is presently open Wednesday-Sunday from 11am-4pm and will be open 7 days a week starting July.
While visiting the winery be sure to try the 2008 Chardonnay, the recently announced winner for “Best Chardonnay” at the 2010 San Francisco International Wine Competition. With rich tropical fruit on the palate, followed by a toasty caramel finish, it is easy to see why this wine won double gold. However, the Chardonnay was not the only award winning wine from Church and State, thanks to their ’07 Coyote Bowl Cabernet Sauvignon, which also received double gold.
The largest wine competition in North America, the San Francisco International Wine Competition consists of wines from Canada, California, Australia, South America and other famous oenological regions being judged based on blind tastings.
