City Winery hosts free summer concerts

The stage for outdoor concerts at City Winery

City Winery is a relative newcomer to the downtown scene, but it’s pulling in both wine and music lovers with an innovative mix of wine-centric events and programs and an interesting lineup of performing artists.

As a welcome to the neighborhood gift in reverse, City Winery paired up with Great Performances to present the Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival: eight weeks of free music played literally in their backyard or back lot as it were  (the entrance is on Spring Street).  Billed as the After-Work NYC Backyard BBQ, the two hour events feature live bands and food and drinks for purchase, include wine made in their own facility.  If you want to drink, you’ll be carded and given one of those fashionable paper wrist bands.

The crowd is a mellow mix of after-work folks, stroller toting young parents, and 20- and 30-somethings from the neighborhood.  Local groups such as the nonprofit The Door and vendors have tables set up, giving the events a festival feel.

The series concludes next week on August 19th with a previously rained out performance by accomplished guitarist Marc Ribot.  But, get there early; the event runs from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

After-Work NYC Backyard BBQ - August, 19, 5:00-7:00 p.m. - City Winery, 155 Varick Street (concert entrance on Spring Street), New York, NY, 10013  - (212) 608-0555
