Instead of going organic or taking on a huge sustainability project, Clos LaChance winery has chosen to help save a little piece of the planet each year – one hummingbird at a time.
Drinking their endangered hummingbird series wine will help to save one hummingbird species each year.
The program originated in 2006 when Clos LaChance offered to donate 15% of their sales of a designated “Endangered Species” wine to the Hummingbird Society. That wine sold out, and nearly $20,000 went to protect the Juan Fernandez Firecrown hummingbird from Chile.
This year’s hummingbird is the Honduran Emerald. You can order the 2005 Honduran Emerald Meritage with a one-year subscription to the Hummingbird Society here for $49.99. It makes a great gift for environmentally concerned friends.
The Honduran Emerald hummingbird was believed extinct from 1950-1988. While we now know it is not (yet) extinct, there are very few left and those birds need help. The funds donated to the Hummingbird Society will be used to help purchase contiguous land to try to restore hummingbird habitat.
