Arcadian Wine Tasting
A local favorite and great place to meet up with friends and make new friends, Rosso Wine Shop does themed flight tastings Friday and Saturday evenings. Rosso Wine Shop carries some hard to find cult wines and a wide variety of international wines. The owner, Jeff Zimmitti, takes a lot of the guess work out of buying wines, providing a more personalized experience, with a wide assortment of reasonably priced wines for the typical disenfranchised wine buyer from large volume stores.
The tastings typically cost $10 per person, and usually have an eclectic assortment of cheeses and crackers to enhance the tasting experience. It is recommended to arrive on the early side, as the cheeses usually disappear long before the patrons do, and it can be difficult to find a place at the bar.
This particular evening the tasting fee was slightly higher for the flight $20 per person, as it featured renowned winemaker Joe Davis, from Arcadian Winery to answer questions, and pour some of his better-known selections of Pinot Noir, Syrah, including a standout Chardonnay.
About Arcadian
Arcadian produces distinctive wines from the California’s Central Coast. A region that has become well-known for producing quality Pinot Noirs. Arcadian produces small yields from their vineyards, and concentrates more on grape quality. Their wines pick up characteristics of the soil and are distinctive representations of the appellation.
The wines:
2006 Sleepy Hollow, Santa Lucia Highlands, Chardonnay - full mouth feel burgundian style with a pleasing mineral characteristic, hints of citrus, good acidity picks up apple/pear and finishes nicely, seemingly lengthening at the end.
2006 Dierberg, Santa Maria Valley, Pinot Noir - young fruit more berry and cola characteristics, a good example of fruit from the Santa Maria Valley.
2005 Fiddlestix Santa Rita Hills, Pinot Noir – aspects of soil and mineral in this offering, slight tart cherry, perhaps even a currant quality.
2005 Pisoni, Santa Lucia Highlands, Pinot Noir - extracted fruit grown in a warmer area, atypical of where you would find most Pinot Noir good balance of fruit to acidity, this wine is age worthy. Pisoni is a well respected Pinot Noir growing region, and this particular wine is an excellent example.
2005 Westerly, Santa Ynez Valley, Syrah – a meaty Rhône style with good pepper and earth and hints of black berries.
