On Sunday, maybe you open a really important, Mr. Big Stuff kind of wine that you want to share with friends over dinner. But when it comes to Monday or Tuesday, not so much. It’s just you and your spouse, or sometimes, just you. Dinner is no big deal, say leftovers, like a ham or turkey sandwich with coleslaw. But you still like to have a glass or two of wine to enhance the daily dining experience.
You need a Monday or Tuesday kind of wine. That is, an inexpensive wine that you don’t feel guilty about opening on a week night but a wine that still has enough verve and panache to kick up your taste buds.
Rock Rabbit Sauvignon Blanc 2009 is exactly like that. Inexpensive but not cheap, if you know what I mean. The fresh, clean nose is a give away that you’re on the right track: plenty of stone fruit, like peach and apricot, as well as green melon. Custard like lemon curd flavors burst onto the palate, followed by peach, apricot and pear. It goes down very easy, almost like a soft drink (7Up?). Not complex or deep either, nor intended to be at this price. However that bright and sprightly lemony acidity seems to help everything (good ham sandwich, it was) go down better and isn’t that the goal? That tart green apple and lemon drop on the finish just wraps of the whole package perfectly.
I don’t know if Rock Rabbit is a large corporate winery or a small, family owned enterprise. I don’t know if they produce 250,000 cases or just 1,000 cases. On Monday or Tuesday, I just don’t care; I just want the wine to taste good with food. And this one does.
Rock Rabbit Sauvignon Blanc 2009 ($8.99) is available at Berbiglia, Cellar Rat, Lukas Liquor, MDL Wine & Spirits, Rimann's Liquors, Riverside Red-X and Royal Liquors.
Previous wine bargain of the week: Carta Vieja Cabernet Sauvignon 2009.
