Last weekend was warm but not too warm for a wine tasting.
Enter into the picture Soho 119 on the south side of 119th street
in Leawood just a tiny bit past Roe. To look at the place near to
the Cheesecake factory and JP Wine bar, your first thought would
be ,.. a clothing store? Do they have food here, let alone wine. But let
me say yes to all three.

In fact , they have a very interesting and creative flair as they combine
retail space with a spa and restaurant. Talk about having it all in the same
place. They even use the grape product in their spa features.

Why would you want to use grape products you may ask? Well, the grape
has well been used as a medicinal aid in cardiac and respiratory ailments,
Their website shares their events in a calender featuring wines and food from
many regions and ethnic diversifications.

The event last weekend was courtesy of The Handcrafted Wines of Kansas.
Dustin hosted a very simple and palatable wine tasting of six wines. They
were all from Italy. Since there is a Italy trip in my immediate future , this
was an especially creative experiment into their world of wine. On a special
note, my husband , a Reisling and Chardonnay drinker was a bit surprised
how well he was able to adapt to the reds he tasted.
There was 6 wines : there of red, and three of white.
In order :
- Canella Prosecco Brut N.V. VSAQ from Veneto, Italy
It was very much like Champagne, bubbly and in a sense spicy. Not at all sweet.
- 2007 Le Ballerine Pinot Grigio from Veneto Italy
This was Brian's favorite because or its closeness to a Reisling. Very balanced.
- 2007 Bortoluzzi Pinot Grigio Venezia Giulia IGT from Fruili Italy
This seemed more tart and almost bitter. This was neither of our favorites.
- 2006 Monte Antico Rosso IGT from Tuscany, Italy
This surprised Brian as he is such a non-red lover. It was very understated. Like
a Merlot in a way. To me it was very Chianti like and since it was composed of 85%
Sangiovese, the grape of Chianti, it made sense that it was my favorite. The color
was light purple and it was alittle bubbly as well.
- 2007 Cocci Tellus Marche Rosso IGT from Marche, Italy
As my paternal grandmother's family is from this region, I very much wanted to try this
one. It wasn't as soft as the one before and had a degree or so higher alcohol level.
It was a deeper purple color but was very nice. Dryer.
- 2006 Avignolo Dolcetto Di Munie DOC from Piedmont, Italy
This was our host's favorite. It was very meaty and the grape carried forward onto the
tip of your tongue.
Interestingly, the company supplies a variety of wines including ones from a vineyard
in Virginia. The next sampling will be same place, same time, same cost ($10) this
Frday the 31st. This time it will be champagnes and sparkling wines from France, Italy
and Spain.
Join them for more fun and great wine against a backdrop of live jazz music.
