Tuesday, State Senate Republican Leader John McKinney withdrew his name from the “potential candidate” hat to succeed Jodi Rell as Connecticut’s governor in the 2010 elections.
However, McKinney will seek re-election for his state Senate seat and plans on subsequently seeking re-election for his leadership role in the Republican Party.
Also on Tuesday, Hamden native and Republican Larry DiNardis, announced his intentions to fill Jodi Rell’s seat, bringing the total number of Republican and Democratic candidates for governor at eleven.
Wednesday, Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz announced that she would run for the state’s position of Attorney General after Richard Blumenthal expressed his Congressional intentions.
Bysiewicz had been the frontrunner in recent Quinnipiac polls for the race for governor (following Jodi Rell’s retirement), but surprised many of her fellow GOP officials by opting to run for Attorney General.
However, political insiders across the state believe that Bysiewicz’s true intention is to attempt to dethrone Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) in the 2012 election, an issue she did not rule out in her announcement.
