It only took 45 days for New Super Mario Bros. Wii Sales to pass the lifetime sales of Super Mario Galaxy in the US. Both games sold millions of copies, but the New title has about 100,000 more sales… so far.
Super Mario Galaxy launched our hero into space over two years ago, and in that time, 4.1 million players have joined him on his journey through the stars. The game received critical acclaim, and it is considered one of- if not the best- game for the Wii.
It its first 45 days, New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 4.2 million copies. This is made even more amazing in that it was the top-selling game of December 2009, topping the hugely-anticipated and critically acclaimed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which wasn’t a slouch in the sales department.
IGN outlined four reasons why New Super Mario Bros. Wii could have sold more: it's similar to the DS title, it has an up-to-four-player multiplayer mode, Nintendo's marketing campaign and coming right after the Wii price drop.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii didn’t quite get the same critical reception Super Mario Galaxy did. Oh, it got spectacular reviews and several Game of the Year awards, but when you look at review scores, critics are in favor of Mario’s 3D space journey. Super Mario Galaxy has an incredible average score of 97.30% on GameRankings, while New Super Mario Bros. Wii has an impressive average score of 88.50% there. Both games are great, but there is a slight difference. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is considered one of the best games of 2009, while Super Mario Galaxy is considered one of the best titles of this generation.
Both are worthy of a spot in your collection, especially if you are a fan of platformers.
