Mershon Hinkel, who promotes herself as the Wii OT, explains that:
- Improving overall health of a community requires the cooperation of the individuals, and that we should
- Learn and apply theories of health behavior change.
Stages of Change Model
Individuals in the "pre-contemplation" stage, when exposed to activities in Wii Fit may increase their awareness of the need to exercise and their awareness of their poor endurance level or their poor balance ability. This awareness may help them to move to the "contemplation" stage. Since Wii Fit brings a fun factor into exercise, individuals may decide that exercise might not be so bad... or they may not even view exergaming as exercise. Participants may look at Wii Fit as just a fun activity, helping the individual to move on to the "preparation for action" stage. And again, since Wii Fit activities provide great feedback and can be played together with others (two aspects of other theories of learning and change), individuals may begin to engage regularly in the use of Wii Fit activities. Once these individuals are well entrenched in this "action" stage, the exercise professional has reached their goal of reaching even the one "who feel[s] downright antagonistic to even the thought of exercise".Take Care! Mershon
Thanks Mershon for your contribution to the ever growing phenomenon of Wii fitness, and thanks for playing seriously. BTW, do you have the EA SPORTS Active Personal Trainer? You will really love it.
