Fusion fitness
ACE has released it's 2010 hottest trends list that includes at #2, group training and at #4, exergaming. Group training or group fitness as it was commonly known last century, generally is led by a group fitness instructor, versus a personal trainer. Fusion fitness [Fitness Fusion, Pump Up Your Workouts: Paige Waehner, About.com Guide/Updated February 20, 2007] assumes that if one is good, two is even better, and fused, may be better still. Examples of fitness fusion classes abound, think Yogilates, Z-box or Chi Running. So why not a fusion of exergaming and group fitness which might look like (drum roll please!) Virtual Fitness Wii FAB (For Absolute Beginners).
The Wii in group fitness
Virtual Fitness Wii FAB (VFF) combines the best of both worlds, the fun of the Wii and the structure of a group fitness class. Imagine a class cued by a Wii game for a group of exercisers. What would it look like? Penda, Goddess of VFF describes how one of the most popular exergames in the world, DanceDanceRevolution (DDR), would look in a group exercise class:
- Imagine entering a dimly lit studio, taking your place in the group and focusing on the screen, listening for the countdown from the group fitness leader. There flashing before your eyes are four arrows, only four moves that you have to learn how to make, front-back and right-left. The arrows are cued predictably to the grooving beat, in order to allow participants to synchronize their moves and maintain rhythmic intensity. All low impact, simply dance stepping from one imaginary arrow on the floor to another.
Exergaming and group fitness fused can take many forms to birth a variety of formats to fit a wide range of fitness levels and needs. Group exercise/training professionals are ready to take the fitness industry to the next level of an all inclusive, all fun, teamwork approach to physical fitness. Are you ready for the dance?
