Showing support for laid-off janitors, hundreds of protesters marched through Century City last Thursday, snarling traffic and creating general havoc for residents and workers alike. Although peaceful for the most part, police arrested more than a dozen protesters who stopped marching to sit in the middle of an intersection.
While no industry has been immune to job cuts during these tough economic times, one can certainly sympathize with the plight of the 16 janitors who obviously have the most to lose from unexpected job cuts. One has to wonder, however, how many already frustrated West Los Angeles residents can find it within themselves to sympathize with a cause that interrupts traffic on a busy Thursday afternoon.
It seems that these days street closures due to protests, demonstrations, and even presidential motorcades seem to be the rule rather than the exception, and residents consequently have little patience left to support causes that shut down the city's major thoroughfares.
A word to the wise - stand up for what you believe in, but proceed with caution. Otherwise you may inadvertently gain more opposition to your cause than the support you so desperately seek.
