A boil water advisory is in effect for anyone living Penn Township, Elizabethtown or in the surrounding area.  Authorities completed a routine quality check and E-coli came up positive.  They do not know what or where the source of the bacteria is.  Authorities added chlorine to the water to flush out the bacteria.

The water is safe for showering and watering plants; however, it is not safe to drink or cook with. It is advised to boil the water for at least one minute.

Authorities were notified by voice mail about the contaminated water, but the Department of Environmental Protection was never called.  It is required that if someone is not reached from the Elizabethtown Water Authorities within a hour, they need to get in contact with the DEP within two hours of positive tests for contamination if authorities cannot be reached.

The advisory will be lifted when the Elizabethtown Water Authorities have two straight days of negative testing of E-coli.

If you want more information about the boil water advisory, call the City Water Quality Laboratory between 7:45am and 4:15pm at (717) 291-4818.

Advisory lifted as of July 13, 2010.

This is so scary for many people. Great info here and glad it was so timely.

Scary - I recently saw an episode of "Monsters Inside Me" where a city water plant was making people sick because it had a parasite in it and the chlorine doesn't kill that type of parasite. They finally figured out that they needed to use a combination of chlorine and UV light therapy for all their water and are now one of the few cities that do to insure the waters safety.
