Bill Cowher's wife, Kaye Cowher, 54, died of skin cancer on Friday.  Along with her husband, Kaye is survived by her daughters Meagan, Lauren and Lindsay.

"Kaye was such a loving and compassionate person and she was the foundation of our family," Bill Cowher, now an NFL analyst with CBS, said in a statement Saturday. "Kaye was always at my side throughout my career as a player, coach, NFL analyst and, most importantly, as a parent to our three daughters."

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in America.  Basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer are the most common types of skin cancer. These types of cancer are mostly due to sunlight exposure.  Basal cell cancer is a slow progression cancer, while squamous cell cancer is more aggressive.

Some risk factors include:

  • History of sunburn
  • Light skin and/or hair
  • Genetics
  • Over the age of 50

There are many ways to help prevent skin cancer.  Sun block should be used year-round, even on cloudy days, because UV rays can penetrate through clouds and still cause damage to the skin.

It is recommended by the CDC that when going outside, you should wear a hat and sunglasses.  The CDC also recommends that you seek shade during the midday hours.

Very sad to hear it--I'm a life long Steeler fan and I send my sympathy to coach Cowers family.
