According to the Center for Disease Control, 72.5 million people are obese in America. In the coming years, the American Institute of Cancer research expects a rise in cancer, because of obesity.

To put this in perspective, there are 2.4 million more obese people in America this year than there were two years ago.

The AICR predicts that there will be 103,000 more cancer cases in the United States this year, because of obesity. There is a strong link between some cancers and obesity.

According to CNN:

AICR projects there will be more than 103,000 new cancer cases caused by excess body fat in 2010. Forty-nine percent are projected to be endometrial cancers, followed by esophageal cancers at thirty five percent and pancreatic cancers at twenty eight percent. It's anticipated that those numbers will increase over the next several years in response to the increased obesity rates.

It has not been established with certainty the relationship between cancer and obesity; however, it has been affirmed that obesity is one of the most modifiable triggers for cancer.

"This means there's really a need for action right now and it's never been more urgent," says Higginbotham. "We emphasize preventing weight gain and maybe preventing future cancers."

Not all people with a BMI of 25 of higher will develop cancer and not all cancer patients are obese. Researches do believe there is a strong correlation between cancer and obesity.
