The ancient Chinese art of feng shui is based on the belief that you can improve and control your life by directing the flow of qi (energy) in your environment.

Every year, every month, and in fact every few hours, energy shifts and changes, according to feng shui and Chinese astrology (which are linked). This time of year, as we naturally start to slow down and enter a biological hibernation mode of sorts, our energy begins to stagnate.

Your house is considered a metaphor or an extension of your body. If you think about your physical being, your good health relies on constant blood, lymph and oxygen circulation. If your blood is not circulating properly, for instance, your cells won't get the nutrients they need to survive.

Likewise, in your home, energy must flow in order for your mind and spirit to remain stimulated. On the other hand, you don't want the energy of your home to be so frenetic or energizing that it's difficult to nest comfortably. The key is to strike a balance between sluggish and overly activated..

This time of year. Feng shui's goal is to prevent your home's energy from becoming stagnant and stuffy. In order to stimulate health, vitality and happiness, the energy must be circulated.

This year is considered an "earth year", which increases the potential for energy to stagnate. The energy of this entire year is considered to be on the slow, murky side, according to feng shui.

One trick for moving energy?
According to San Francisco feng shui consultant Peggy Nederlof, you can place metal objects-such as candlesticks or picture frames-in the northern sector of your house. An oscillating metal fan is ideal, because it literally circulates the air.
