Eucalyptus, a powerful healing plant for the lungs
During this transitional time of year, taking care of your immune system becomes a vital weapon against the threat of winter flues and the doldrums of flagging daylight.
According to the Five Elements system of Chinese Medicine—which observes nature and our health based on the concepts of earth, water, wood, fire and metal—the key to bolstering the immune system is to build up the lungs and ward off seasonal dampness with preventative as well as therapeutic remedies. One great way to do this is with essential oils.
Peggy Nederlof, a San Francisco-based feng shui consultant and essential oil expert, suggests using eucalyptus or fir tree oils in order to clarify the lungs and battle seasonal dampness. According to Peggy, it's worth investing in therapeutic-grade essential oils, which are more potent and are based on higher quality ingredients from reputable sources, but often have to be purchased from a private distributor rather than from a store.
On Peggy's web site, you can buy Young Living's concoction of eucalyptus, rosemary, cinnamon, clove and lemon oil, known as Thieves Blend. The name (and the formula) come from a colorful French legend. As the story goes, 15th century grave robbers during the time of the Black Plague were renowned for never getting sick. When they were finally caught, a plea bargain was struck: if they would reveal the secret to their immunity, they would receive a lighter sentence. Thus, the revelation of their essential oil blend was born. Thieves Blend is a great immunity boost this time of year.
Essential oils have been used for centuries as therapeutic remedies. And with highly refined essential oils, a drop or two goes a long way. A little bit of oil in a diffuser will circulate the aroma throughout your house. Or, if you are out and about, a tiny dose on your pulse points (inner wrist and neck) will help you carry the healing benefits of aromatherapy through your day.
