Starting today, McDonald's Corp. will be offering $3 refunds to customers who bought "Shrek Forever After" drinking glasses, the promotional items recalled last week because they're tainted with cadmium. To qualify consumers will be asked to fill out refund slips and return the items to any McDonald's restaurant. They were originally sold for $1.99 with a food purchase and $2.49 without.
The 16-ounce glasses were recalled June 4 in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, after it was found that the designspainted on them contained the cadmium (a metal generally used in making batteries, metal coatings and plastic). "Brief inhalation of high concentrations of cadmium may cause lung disease," according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
So far, there have been no reported injuries according to McDonald’s and the CPSC. The glassware was made in the United States by ARC International, and featured pictures of the characters, Shrek, Fiona, Puss-in-Boots and Donkey to promote the fourth movie in the DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. and Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures series. More than 7 million of the glasses were bought.
