Aromatherapy affects us every time we experience incense, perfumes, flowers, linen sprays...even a spring day. Essential oils, the pure essence of the plant, provide the scents that cause positive reactions in our brains. With over 100 essential oils available, there are countless combinations that can provide both physical and mental benefits.
Commonly known therapies:
- Lavender - known to have a calming effect
- Eucalyptus - effective at clearing sinuses and congestion
- Lemon/Citrus - have an energizing effect
Not all oils are safe to use though and it's important to know that not everything on the market is actually all-natural. Watch out for ingredients listing 'fragrance' when you are purchasing products. These contain synthetic chemicals and do not carry the same healing properties as natural essential oils.
By inhaling these oils or applying them to the skin, your brain triggers a response that can result in relaxation, joy or even wellbeing.
Aromatherapy Treatments:
- Inhalation - sprays, incense and candles all cause the positive trigger in your brain that reacts to the scents you are experiencing.
- Absorption - applying these oils to the skin allows them to be absorbed into the blood stream which can result in improved skin conditions and trigger the same reactions as inhaling the scents of the oils. You've probably experience this through massage oil or lotions. *Note, oils should always be diluted before applying directly to the skin*
- Internal - when taken orally and specially blended, essential oils can have an even deeper effect. These are used by the drop to the tongue and mixed in liquid.
Aromatherapy has also been shown to help with emotional well-being. Products created from companies such The Kaliana Company can have an immediate impact. They target specific emotions such as anger, grief, sadness, etc. Each scent is blended to alter your state of mind naturally so you feel happier, more confident or less stressed.
