Drinking increases the risk of cancer in
women
Should women be alarmed at this new study coming out of the UK from the Million Women Study? Contrary to what has been conventional wisdom for years now, alcohol has been found to increase several forms of cancer in women that drink one to two units a day.
Forms of Cancer that Increased with Consumption
According to the study resultes published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Moderate Alcohol Intake and Cancer Incidence in Women, drinking regularly increased the risks of the following cancers:
- Breast cancer
- Esophagul cancer
- Laryngeal cancer
- Liver cancer
- Cancer of the oral cavity and pharanyx
- Rectal cancer
The study shows that the trends were similar for women who consumed both wine and other forms of alcohol. A positive takeaway was that the increasing levels of alcohol consumption showed a decreased risk of thyroid cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and renal cell carcinoma.
Beyond a moderate alcohol consumption the study finds that "each additional drink regularly consumed per day may account for approximately 15 excess cancers per 1,000 women up to age 75."
