Natural defense against swine flu: Protect you and your family holistically

Swine flu originated with pigs and now affects humans

Swine influenza A (H1N1), has become a human to human viral infection in both Mexico and the United States. According to the CDC this form of swine flu has symptoms similarly to the regular flu:

  • fatigue
  • headaches
  • chills
  • fevers
  • cough
  • sore throat

Some people are also reporting they have diarrhea and vomiting with the swine flu.

Prevention against swine flu

Swine flu has arrived in New England and many people are concerned about the amount of travelers in the region. Preventing swine flu is especially important for people with:

  • underdeveloped immune systems, such as children
  • compromised immunity - after major surgery or a longterm infection or illness
  • the elderly

The CDC is recommending general steps to be taken for preventing the spread of swine flu:

  • Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water and use hand sanitizers when you don't have access to soap and water.
  • Avoid spreading germs from your hands to orfices by touching the eyes, nose and mouth.

Natural and Holistic prevention tools

Start with the mind-body approach to releasing any fears you may have about the swine flu. Fear and stress can weigh heavy on your emotional and physical body so don't buy into the panic mantra. If you find yourself anxious or nervous about the outbreak try some guided meditation or yoga to help recenter and find a cautioned attitude instead.

There are many great resources to bolster the immune system and serve as prevention for you and your family. Seek out sources of fresh vitamin C such as orange juice or rosehip jam. The culinary herbs oregano and thyme are known to have anti-viral properties and can be taken as a preventive measure. Check your local health food store for potent forms of oil of oregano but be forewarned that the oil is very strong in flavor!

Immune support herbs such as echinacea and goldenseal are popular to ward of the common flu and support the immune system naturally. Just be cautious that echinacea is not recommended for people suffering from seasonal allergies as it can act as an allergen.

You may also continue working on your seasonal eating and cleanse to reduce the toxin load of the body so it can be prepared to stave off any illness, including the swine flu.

Any mind-body-spirit modalities that seek to encourage the body's natural healing mechanisms may be helpful during this time. They might include:

Caution: One should NOT take Echinacea for treatment of swine flu!
Echinacea can induce production of cytokines, which is the major factor in why Swine Flu, unlike seasonal flu can be more deadly to healthy young adults. It tricks the body's immune system into over-production of cytokines, creating a "cytokine storm"; a fatal immune system feedback loop.

Correction: Swine flu is a very contageious and deadly disease, its only naturual for people to catch the H1N1 influenza because of illness and not because of incorrect reasons to end up with the swine flu!
