The DASH diet(Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) was initially developed by the US National Institute of Health to lower blood pressure without the use of medication.
According foodconsumer.org, the DASH diet, has been highly recommended by health professionals, and the great news is that it not only effectively combats high blood pressure; it is also a great dietary tool for weight loss and the prevention of heart disease.
Although the DASH diet proved it's effectiveness in lowering blood pressure through a low sodium diet. It also helps to lower cholesterol, which helps to promote weight loss, and maintaining a healthy weight.
The diet is high in magnesium and potassium, relatively low in fat and loaded with beans, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables. It is a good healthy diet the whole family can follow and flexible enough to include a variety of food choices.
Foodconsumer. org referenced a completed study on the DASH diet and reported the following information: "...previous studies have already proven and established DASH as effective in controlling hypertension." "According to a column authored by Jane Brody, one such study consisted of 1298 people from Massachusetts, aged 55-65, who volunteered to participate in a study back in 1976. The follow-up analysis, which ran for 22 years, showed that many of those who maintained a DASH diet no longer needed medication for high blood pressure."
The Dash diet has been endorsed by the American Heart Association, The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the US Department of Health and Human Services, US guidelines for the treatment of high blood pressure and most recently, the DASH diet was instrumental in forming the platform for the new USDA food pyramid.

When I first saw this I thought it was the Mrs. Dash diet! LOL! I guess that wouldn't be too bad either since it's salt-free. I'll have to check the DASH diet out. Thanks!
Sounds like a good plan- I think it is hte one they put my Mom-in-law on and it worked really well. I'll have to double check to see if it is the same.
My doctor recommend the DASH diet for me. I never knew there was a book for it, I would be more inclined to use the diet if I could actually read a book about it. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for this info, Cheryl. My dad has terrible blood pressure problems and the medications have really taken a toll on him. I wonder if he can do a diet like this. I'll have to ask him!
