A few years back, video fitness pioneer Kathy Smith teamed up with Beachbody and released the popular Project You! workout and diet package. The set was designed to ease people into fitness and was adaptable to people of all fitness levels.
Beachbody has repurposed those same workouts with new nutrition information and offers it as Project You! Type 2, a comprehensive package designed for people with type 2 diabetes or those at risk for the disease, which, when you think about it, could be pretty much everyone. The set is developed with the American Diabetes Association.
Diabetes is a huge fear of mine. I don’t have it, but I get my bloodwork checked at every yearly physical because my brother developed an aggressive case of the disease a few years ago. It never ran in my family until he got it, probably from living the modern lifestyle of fast food and not exercising.
I have the original Project You set and it’s a great, no-nonsense fitness program that features aerobics, strength training, yoga, pilates and walking. The workouts, which come on three DVDs and one audio CD, are easy enough for beginners but can also keep intermediate exercisers sweating. This time around, the DVDs are packaged in a great little brick, a la P90X.
As for the rest of the set, you also get the Good2Eat Cookbook, which is a 105-page spiral-bound book of meal and snack ideas, a food exchange list, recipes and a meal plan, all within the ADA’s guidelines. In addition there’s a set of mix-and-match meal cards, which make the all-important meal planning a breeze.
Keeping track of diet and exercise is crucial to keeping your blood sugar and weight in check, and there’s a 12-week journal in a convenient CD size. You can also track your workouts on a wall calendar.
The set sells for three payments of $39.95 on the Beachbody Web site and would make a thoughtful gift for a loved one who is new to the disease.
