Biggest Loser season 9 makeover week
Oh yeah, it’s makeover week! Besides the finale, the Biggest Loser makeover show is the most anticipated in the series.
Ali interrupts the contestants’ Multigrain Cheerios infomercial to tell them that they’ll be made over. When Ali says “I think we’re all collectively thrilled to see Michael get a haircut” she’s not just talking about the contestants – she’s speaking for the universe.
First it was off to shop. Sunshine was surprised to see that she was too small for the plus-size store. Daris was used to buying his jeans at the farm supply store, so he’s a fish out of water. Mike is slightly dismayed to see that he’s by himself at the big and tall men’s store. “Aaargh, who loses 189 pounds and still can’t fit into clothes?” Mike laments.
Jonathan Antin, “the go-to hair guy” greets the contestants at the salon for their transformations. Daris had enough golden curls that Antin scooped them up for Locks of Love.
First up on the transformation train was Sunshine, who shocked her brothers with her sunny new look. Koli looked smashing in his “nerd chic” getup. (Koli’s dad is a hunk!) Ashley’s sisters jumped and squealed and rubbed her newly unveiled collarbones. Sam, in his elegant athletic-tinged clothes, cut a fine form and his parents were quite proud. Daris looked like a completely different person. And then it was time for Sideshow Mike. He looked phenomenal (I’m thinking “chubby Michael Buble”) but it was his sister Roseangela who stole the moment on the show, with her tearful admission that now she feels like the bigger sister. The scene was similar to Mike Morelli’s makeover on season 7, when his younger brother Max saw the new Mike.
Then it was time for dot dot dot Ashanti. Pretty big buildup for something that we all knew from the TV commercials.
The challenge: Time to mess up the hairstyles. Each contestants has a Jacobs Ladder suspended over a pool. When you stop you get dumped in the pool. Winner gets a 1-pound advantage. First one in is a a rotten egg (and gets a 1-pound penalty). Ashley was first in the pool. It got down to Koli and Daris, who climbed for an hour, then 90 minutes, then 2 hours. Finally, after 2 ½ hours, Daris said “Ahh, screw it!” and fell into the pool.
Last-chance workout: Bob and Jillian were thrilled to see the gussied up contestants and worked ‘em out hard, since they spent a lot of time shopping and primping. Bob didn’t like that Daris gave up at the end of the challenge and picked his brain as to why he did that. “I want you to be relentless, because that’s who you are,” Bob said.
He then proceeded to kick Daris’ butt.
Weigh-in and elimination: Holy crap, Koli lost 15 pounds – and that’s before the extra pound. Way back when, during an interview, Alison Sweeney said someone would lose 200 pounds on the ranch so it was clear that Mike’s weight loss would keep him here another week. Sam was happy with his 2-pound loss as were Bob and Jillian. He knows there isn’t much weight left to lose on his muscular frame. “Don’t underestimate the Pink Ninja,” said Ashley, who lost 10 pounds, overcame the 1-pound disadvantage and broke a Biggest Loser record for the most weight lost by a woman on the ranch.
Mike and Sam were up for elimination. Mike’s plea to stay on the ranch was the most convincing. “I don’t see that finish line – it’s far,” he said as he pointed out that everyone else is much closer to being at goal. At the table, the votes went 2 for Sam and 2 for Mike. We also learned that Daris made a deal with Mike not to ever vote to eliminate him. Since he had the lowest percentage of weight lost this week, Sam was eliminated.
The update: Sam is down to 236 pounds and his guns are smokin’. He’s actually at goal weight and reached it at the ranch. And he’s happy. He moved to Southern California and is dating fellow season 9 contestant Stephanie, who has an incurable "case of the Sams."
Next week: Only three episodes left. Mike’s mad that he’s still fat (his words) and we get a visit from season 3 winner Erik Chopin, who had regained a lot of weight but is in the process of losing it again.
