There are a number of food journals and calorie counters available on the internet but few focus on diabetes. Seven time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong changes that with MyPlate D at LIvestrong.com.
He tells USA Today, "Much like with cancer survivors or those who have HIV, people with diabetes have been dealt this hand, a health challenge. Ultimately, we wanted to be there to help them achieve a healthy quality of life, help them live to their fullest."
The new tool, called MyPlate D, targets diabetics and their nutritional needs. It was developed specifically with type 2 diabetics in mind.
Many web users are familiar with the Livestrong.com application, The Daily Plate, which allows registered users to create and maintain their online food journals and track their weight loss progression. MyPlate D takes it one step further and has already shown early positive results from current users.
By allowing users to track the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fat) along with their blood glucose levels, weight, sodium, insulin, and more, MyPlate D will allow its users to more easily spot trends and make necessary adjustments to their diet.
With the obesity epidemic skyrocketing in the US, type 2 diabetes is becoming more and more prevalent. There are currently an estimated 23.6 million people in the US, or 7.8% of the population, that have diabetes with another 57 million people considered to have pre-diabetes (metabolic syndrome).
Recent studies have shown that the most effective tool in controlling type 2 diabetes is weight loss and exercise. MyPlate D aims to make it easier to do just that.
