No doubt that as you embark on your shopping marathon this weekend that you will most likely stop to have a coffee break. It's hard to avoid not running into a Starbucks no matter where you might be shopping, and if you don't see one at first, the aroma wafting from a store will certainly lure you into one soon enough.
While you might justify a high-calorie coffee drink by all the mall walking you are doing, do you really know how much you would have to walk to burn off those additional calories?
Should you want to try one of Starbucks's holiday drinks, the Caramel Brulee Latte will weigh in at 310 calories for 16 ounces (Grande size), the Peppermint Mocha is 290 calories, and the Gingerbread Latte has the least number of calories, at 200. All are computed with nonfat milk and no whipped cream. No one is suggesting that you give up your coffee drink.
If you are truly committed to your weight loss plan, here are some lower calorie alternatives that should satisfy that urge. If you can settle for plain coffee, regardless of the size at Starbucks, the total calories in each is 5. No problem walking that amount off as you shop til you drop!
1. Caffe Latte - Tall, with nonfat milk, 100 calories. Add a flavoring, and you add 50 more calories. A Tall Skinny Latte has just 90 calories (made with a sugar-free flavoring).
2. Cappuccino - Tall, nonfat milk, 60 calories.
3. Espresso - 10 calories max, depending on which one you get.
Stopping in to get a hot chocolate instead? Not a good idea. A Tall with nonfat milk and no whipped cream has 190 calories. Their Signature Hot Chocolate (no whipped cream) is even worse--a Tall has 320 calories. Not exactly worth it when you consider how long you would have to walk at a leisurely 3mph to burn off that indulgence.
Think that a tea drink would be a better choice? Coming up: Calories in Starbucks tea drinks.
