Here on the Allentown weight lifting examiner page, we have covered a few different aspects of the iron sports, including powerlifting, Olympic lifting, bodybuilding and strongman events. One we have not yet covered is something your author has only fairly recently become familiar with, and it is called crossfit.
What exactly is crossfit? Well, it is a genre of physical training that is kind of hard to define. It contains components of almost all the iron sports we have covered in this column, but has several additional ones that are more demanding of the cardio and endurance departments.
It challenges strength, power, endurance, balance, flexibility and plain old physical toughness.
Workouts are seldom the same from day to day, but can consist of bodyweight strength drills, sprints with or without additional loads, rowing or paddling, Olympic style or powerlifting style lifts, calisthenics, endurance runs and more. Athletes that excel in one particular area, such as competitive lifting, may find themselves challenged to the limit when faced with the more endurance based components of this type of training. A distance runner or cyclist, rower, etc, may find the strength and power components of the regime more than they bargained for.
If you are not satisfied with a one dimensional approach and are looking to get a high degree of overall fitness, than this mode of training may just be the ticket for you.
Crossfit style gyms seem to be springing up all over the place as this form of super demanding training becomes more popular. There are several right here in the greater Allentown area.
