Denver brides and grooms are saying, “Make me a supermodel!”
Today’s wedding photography goes beyond the staid family portraits and the now-mainstream photojournalistic style to the latest trend: wedding as fashion shoot. Brides and grooms are seeking edgy, sleek, fashion-magazine-style shots that make them feel – and look - like superstars.
Denver wedding photographers are helping innovate this movement. Travis Broxton, renowned for his stylistic, high-art approach to weddings, says he thinks about the bride’s body movement, her dress, her personality and how to best play those elements off the surrounding environment.
He’ll lie on his back or climb walls to capture the bride and groom juxtaposed with unusual light patterns, interesting angles or architectural details. He also uses wide-angle and fish-eye lenses for special effects.
Broxton even puts together a hard-bound, full-color coffee-table book of these cutting-edge wedding portraits for the bride and groom.
Denver wedding photographer Joe Keum says his brides seek artistic, edgy portraits in a style similar to the great fashion and commercial photography masters. One technique Keum uses is the off-camera flash, which creates dramatic lighting for a chic look that could be straight from a magazine.
Keum has noticed that men, especially, are digging the groom-as-supermodel trend. Because grooms are not always involved in every element of the wedding planning, these shoots put the spotlight on them for a while and make them feel glamorous, handsome and confident.
