As I've been reviewing wedding trends over the past years, I must say I'm amazed at the number of brides that wait to book their wedding entertainment. I fully understand that the game has changed a bit with the economy and credit crunch but more and more brides are "gambling" with their wedding vendors, especially DJs.
The question I ask, do you really want to gamble with your wedding entertainment? Many brides don't know what to look for when booking their wedding entertainment; so they rely on friends, weddings they attend, and reviews. Some may search online via The Knot or maybe simply Google search. These are all great resources but I still think researching and booking in advance is a better "gamble" than waiting until 3 months or even closer to your wedding date. If you want the best entertainment: plan, research, and book early!
If you are looking for more ways to research and find wedding entertainment, here are some great questions to ask:
Who will be the actual DJ or DJs entertaining on my wedding day?
Does the DJ provide a contract? Review the contract!
How long will you hold the date for us? What deposit is required to hold the date?
How long have you been in the business? Do you work exclusively for this company?
Do you have other events on the date of my wedding that you'll personally perform?
What differentiates you from all the other DJs?
How many weddings have you performed?
What are the newest or latest trends in wedding entertainment?
Will you emcee the wedding?
Can you provide custom up-lighting?
Have you performed at my venue? Do you have any specific recommendations for my venue?
What do you do if my guests aren't dancing?
Can we do anything different for the typical wedding formalities vs. what is typically done?
Can we submit a "Do Not Play List" or a "Must Play List"?
These are only a few questions to research when reviewing wedding DJs or entertainment. If a DJ or entertainment company seems to stutter at any of these requests, move on- they will not customize your evening into "your night" to remember. Chances are they have a "canned" cheesy routine that will not be the entertainment you envisioned.
How do you differentiate one company from another? They all have music and equipment. On the surface, it would appear that all companies are the same. However, anyone having been to an event where the entertainment is unbearable, will eagerly describe the true value of a distinguished company.
