A good wedding photographer will be able to recreate the story of your day. The great ones will do it in such a unique and creative way that it will make the story unforgettable, not just for you, but for anyone who looks at your photos.
That is where Matt Ramos Photography comes in. Owner Matt Ramos defines himself as a "Creative Journalist." Yes, he is going to fit your style, mesh with your character and make you feel comfortable in front of the camera, but best of all, he is going to add creative style like no other in the industry.
"Most brides and photographers tend to use the word 'photojournalistic' quite a bit – this means documenting without much involvement and concentrating mainly on candid moments that take place without direction," Ramos explains. "While I do think these types of images offer extreme value when documenting a wedding, I also feel images should be as creative as possible, and therefore some light direction is sometimes needed to help the couple fall into place."
This "light direction" is what attributes to his unique style, giving him the ability to produce those unexpected images that every bride hopes to get out of her day - dramatic poses, amazing colors and breathtaking backdrops. Or more simply put, all the images that make your wedding story come alive every time you look at them.
"Since we shoot all weddings with two photographers and mix up the style of shooting throughout the day, my clients can expect to see a wide variety of images," Ramos said, who was recently listed one of the top upstate photographers by The Knot .
Having a second photographer is something every bride can appreciate for several reasons. First and foremost, with a second shooter, Ramos has the ability to focus more on the creative styling his brides are looking for while also providing more photos and as well as a combination that depicts different angles and perspectives. Sometimes, depending on the bride's needs, Ramos has also used a third photographer.
Ramos, who started photographing weddings nearly 10 years ago, found his passion for photography much further back in his life. As part of a military family, by the time he was 19, Ramos had visited over 15 countries, living in five of them. As a kid, frequent relocations and having to create new friends can be quite a struggle, but Ramos found a way to cope.
"Photography was a way for me to reduce stress, express myself creatively, and share some of my experiences from around the world with friends and family back home," Ramos said.
Beginning his photography career with a focus on landscapes, Ramos said the start of his wedding photography career happened almost effortlessly and in fact, he admitted to trying his best to not head in that direction. The story starts with a bride who had seen some of the landscape photos on his website and called him to inquire about photographing her wedding. Looking back on it, Ramos said this moment was probably the one that defined the future success of Matt Ramos Photography.
"Just the thought of shooting a wedding back then was more stress than I could handle and I quickly explained that I had never shot a wedding before and didn’t want to be some guy that ruined her wedding photos," Ramos said.
But this bride was not deterred. She was persistent enough to make Ramos concede and ask more questions. When he did, he found out she happened to be getting married on the anniversary weekend of when he had proposed to his wife, and as fate would have it, the wedding location was actually in the same town where he had proposed.
"As much as I feared what could possibly happen, the coincidences lead me to believe I should maybe give it a try and my wife and I quickly made a weekend getaway trip out of the ordeal, which seemed to be an awkwardly perfect scenario for us," Ramos said, now thankful to the persistent bride who helped him realize his true passion.
As time went on, Ramos continued shooting weddings, and by his second year in business Matt Ramos Photography was booked for nearly 30 weddings. With each wedding his work continued to improve, and now he can be booked almost a year and a half in advance of a wedding date. Ramos keeps his availability schedule online as a way to make it easier for brides to make sure he is open for their special day.
"There is no greater feeling than driving home from an amazing wedding knowing that we have some great images to blog and share with the couple," Ramos said. "I’m often up until 2 or 3 am after a wedding (even as exhausted as I am) looking through images and determining which shots are my favorites and what I can do with them."
All of the Matt Ramos Photography team use high end Canon digital cameras like the 1D Mark III and 1D Mark IV and even the 5D Mark II. And as Canon continues to update their line, so will Ramos. A plus for this team is the Canon L Series Lens they use which gives them the ability to shoot from a distance and in extremely low light conditions without any effect to the quality of the images.
Matt Ramos Photography is located in Schenectady but his coverage area expands far beyond the Capital District.
"Over the years, our team has gotten to travel a lot more and I really enjoy seeing and working in different venues to keep my work fresh," Ramos said.
