At some point in the historic age of the 1990s, outcast teenagers placed their chin on their clenched fists and wondered, "What will the Internet be like in the future?"
Unfortunately, the Internet graduated not as privacy-friendly as it once was (when angst was furtively recorded onto Livejournal, typed in the light of a lava lamp), and thus, its users graduated with the Internet as a very different, open environment. Soon, my generation found that the titans of the Internet (Livejournal, MySpace, Facebook, and soon-to-be Twitter) were no longer the entertainers. They were the Internet-grind.
So where, oh where, can we find genuine Internet entertainment that does not add a blob to our virtual shadow? There is one site that I visit daily for entertainment, and that is The Oatmeal.
The Oatmeal is a one-man Web band: Matthew Inman. Out of the kindness of his heart, he dedicates his design and programming skills to making the Web seem less like satellite television with "no available channels."
Inman crafts informative comics and quizzes both to teach and to humor (aka, the best way to teach). The one that won me over: "Seventeen things worth knowing about your cat."
The Oatmeal = the "More You Know" NBC messages after some wine and sweet potato fries.
