Google UFO mystery logo
Why does Google sport a UFO on its logo and why is "unexplained phenomenon" trending? The Google UFO logo mystery makes Web buzz today...
Update: Google sends out mysterious tweet and an official statement about the Google UFO logo (see below).
Nicknamed the Google doodle, the world famous logo was altered (not by alien rays) today to include a flying saucer (see image) and in itself has become unexplained phenomena.
Web surfers are puzzled enough with that but also perplexed because "unexplained phenomenon" and related search derivatives (top 10 unexplained phenomena) became the most popular search term on Google Trends.
The reason why the Google UFO logo is news is that typically the search engine leader arts up its logo to reflect a holiday or special event. Then includes a decriptive name and link for interested parties to learn more news or information.
Today when one clicks on the logo, viewers are instead directed to search results that contain the term “unexplained phenomenon.” Funny thing though, it's mostly about Google's UFO logo rather than some paranormal activity explained.
At first blush, it’s as if Google designed the puzzling artwork to boost its search service. Unlikely... at least as its sole motivator. Speculators have also indicated the other-wordly image may be related to a sci-fi movie release, a UFO festival (such as Exeter) or other less well-known anniversary involving Area 51. (The Roswell UFO Festival is July 4 weekend, incidentally.)
If you search "Google UFO" via the images section you can find some nifty Google Earth pictures with unidentified objects...pun intended, but no answer.
Maybe it is the anniversary of when the first UFO was reported, but it is not easy to locate. Now, articles on Google’s unexplained antics are filling up the slot for the mystery and it may take some digging to find out.
It’s likely that the Google blog will respond to the puzzle…perhaps even on twitter, if history is reliable -- or some sci-fi nerd will reveal the answer.
Otherwise, the first of the top 10 unexplained phenomena is simply human nature. Google easily shows that with their clever search term and self-fulfilling media coverage and interest in unexplained phenomena concerning them.
The truth is out there and will be updated here.

Update - 2:13 p.m. Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineLand.com has been following the mystery of the Google UFO logo and writes about a mysterious tweet, a clue?
Official statement from Google: “We consider the second ‘o’ critical to user recognition of our brand and pronunciation of our name. We are actively looking into the mysterious tweet that has appeared on the Google twitter stream and the disappearance of the “o” on the Google homepage. We hope to have an update in the coming weeks.” -- Search Engine Land
