2010: the revolution of online video?

 Pixetell's Hyperlens offers desktop viewing

There's been significant talk within the web world of the rapid inroads that online video has made in 2009. Recalling how Youtube was not even around a mere few years ago, we are reminded of Moore's Law and how exponential growth in any technology field comes at an alarming rate. Nonetheless, with 2010 just a week away, the forecasts are flooding in. Will the new year be the 'It Year' for video?

In November, industry personnel gathered for the ad:tech conference held in Manhattan. With an emphasis on digital marketing, there were lively discussions on the future of video advertising according to Unicast VP of of Marketing, Bryan Hjelm. With an explosion of made-for-tv content available online and exponential growth expected for the new year, the video industry is rethinking their marketing strategies for a video revolution... little wonder.

So news out of Portland, OR, this morning ties in nicely to this video revolution prediction. Pixetell's latest contribution to the traditional media exodus comes on the heels of 2010 and with high hopes. The announcement of the Pixetell Hyperlens from Ontier, Inc., brings a new, innovative and functional addition to the current webcam line-up, further illustrating the ascent of the industry. The new technology allows users to speak through the lens while positioning it directly at your monitor, essentially integrating your desktop so that it is viewable to your audience. With nifty additional features for further creativity, the Hyperlens has the potential to be used for many practical and creative things. Founder and CEO of Ontier, Sabastian Rapport, suggests it as "a great way to connect with people when they’re not available at that time. It's better than web conferencing or email for lots of kinds of communications, and Hyperlens serves as a real attention grabber."

With more people logging on to their computers and mobile devices for their media needs and the evolution of social media as a major force in the marketing world, it is easy to see why many predictions are bright for online video in the coming year. The only caution may very well be to keep things simple, for it's not always necessary to have the best technology for every task at hand (afterall, some things will always be popular thanks to their efficiency alone). While we've seen recent trends in online video growing ever more astonishing,  the new applications must strive for a balance between their revolutionary ideas and the usability thereof for their target audience: the average household.
