Do you enjoy a good laugh? Sure, we all do. The incredibly funny and extremely despotic leader of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, after recently deciding to join Twitter, has now hired a staff of 200 to help him reply to tweets. Evidently socialism is a form of government that can create jobs almost instantly.
2 weeks ago Chavez joined the microblogging site and now can stake claim as the top Twitter user in Venezuela having racked up more than 237,000 followers as of this morning, beating the 234,000 followers from Globovision, a television channel that frequently criticizes the socialist leader.
According to his Twitter bio, Hugo Chavez is “Presidente de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela. Soldado Bolivariano, Socialista y Antiimperialista.” Despite what you may think, that translates into, “President of the Bolivariana Republic of Venezuela. Bolivariano soldier, Socialist and Anti-imperialisthas,” and not dictator that currently enjoys reinforcing how crazy he is while running a country into the ground.
Chavez follows five others, one another noted technology and freedom of speech advocate, Fidel Castro, and after receiving some 50,000 messages reported since he’s joined Twitter, Chavez has decided to hire 200 Twitter aides to assist him in responding to those he’s received. According to Chavez, “I’m creating a team due to the avalanche of requests, and some grievances”.
To date Chavez’s Twitter use has not caused as much controversy as that which swirled around renaming a Dallas, Texas street after the unrelated Cesar Chavez, but give Hugo time. It has after all only been two weeks.
Do you follow Hugo Chavez or any other politician or world leader on Twitter? Even with 237,000 followers, do you think it really requires 200 people to assist one in running a Twitter account? When you're getting into hundreds of thousands of followers, yes, I can see how it could be possible to need 200 assistants, especially someone with such global name recognition. Even if that recognition comes from such disgraceful acts. In fact, if he really starts using Twitter and begins to fully grasp the expansive reach it has, local citizens may just see further censoring...
