Query: Are you an AT&T customer frustrated by slow service, or no service on your iPhone, iPad, or other device peddled by AT&T? Yes? Then, throw your hands in the air and shout hallelujah, but only if a recent announcement by the telecommunications company carries with it any level of truth.
Yesterday Dallas-based AT&T’s chief executive of Operations, John Stankey, stated AT&T will upgrade its mobile network to provide mobile data service with higher speeds by the end of this year.
Known as HSPA+, the technology increases download speeds, providing mobile phone providers and internet companies the ability to deliver streaming video and other data-reliant services to smartphone and mobile computing device users faster and more reliably than they do at present.
How fast will the new technology be compared to what the company delivers at present? Download speeds of up to 80 megabits per second are expected following the upgrade. That’s triple the present speed of 24 mbps AT&T offers under its existing $65-a-month Max Turbo broadband plan and faster than the 50 mbps FiOS internet service offered by rival Verizon.
The effort by AT&T to increase its speeds will allow it to better compete against T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel and Verizon, who are either rolling out faster network technology or will at points soon. Further, the upgrade will position the company closer to the goal of outfitting 100 million homes with access to broadband services delivering at least 100 mbps by the end of this decade.
Good news for you AT&T customers? If you are considering switching providers will you move to AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint Nextel? If Sprint, will you fork over an additional $10 a month when the EVO 4G by HTC is released?
