There are many check-in services for use on one’s mobile device. Foursquare, SCVNGR, WeReward, DeHood and my absolute favorite, Gowalla.
Why Gowalla? First, they are based in Texas, Austin to be specific. Second, the design of their site, iPhone app, iPad app, and Android apps are tremendous. Third, I like getting virtual gifts, and I like the fact that they are taking their time to develop a quality set of mobile and CPU applications, among others.
Why don’t I like Foursquare? The interface, the fact that you are deemed cool if you are a mayor or get a new badge (neither a mayor, nor a merit badge should be classified as “cool”) and the fact that the kid in their logo above has purple hair, rolled up sleeves and appears to be enjoying a child’s game way too much
Gowalla has announced that they are entering politics. No, their grand CEO is not running for political office, rather, they are allowing politicians to participate in the fun that is Gowalla. According to the announcement, “we knew we needed to start building tools for politicians and people to more closely connect around the issues that are important to them.”
Continuing, “Today, Gowalla is opening up the Events feature to politicians, providing an innovative way for candidates to educate voters and stay connected. You will now be able to follow some of your favorite politicians on Gowalla to learn where they are while on the campaign trail and what images/comments people are sharing. Plus, if you attend an event from one of the politicians using Gowalla, you will receive a custom Gowalla Passport Stamp.”
One of their initial partners? Incumbent Texas Governor Rick Perry (R-TX).
Further, Gowalla has added a political category enabling Gowalla Passport holders to create their own political events.
Are you a Gowalla user? If not, why, and which check-in service do you prefer?
