The announcement of a new tablet device coming to market seems to be a weekly event. In the event you haven’t heard, Apple launched the iPad, HP and Microsoft were rumored to have tablet devices on the way (they’ve since been shelved), Google is working on an Android-based tablet with Verizon, and today reports have surfaced that BlackBerry is working on a tablet device. Sound exciting? Wait until you hear the details of what sounds like a horrendous attempt by Research in Motion at joining the tablet market.
According to a story posted on BoyGeniusReport.com, the BlackBerry tablet will be an 8.9” “companion” to one’s BlackBerry smartphone.
The article claims the BlackBerry tablet will arrive with no pre-installed cellular network technology. Rather, the device will connect to your BlackBerry, sold by Dallas-based AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and other mobile carriers through Bluetooth or one’s BlackBerry WiFi capabilities.
Further, the story notes that the tablet is scheduled for a December launch, but those working on the tablet are feverishly trying to get the device to market much sooner. The tablet is also said to feature multimedia capabilities; an e-book reader, email, web browsing and photo viewing.
Personally this sounds like a terrible idea. What do you think? Will the BlackBerry device prove to be a success?
