The iPad does many things, but is it a cannibal? Is a revolution in computing taking place right before our eyes? Based on a new report which shows that Apple’s iPad is now selling a greater pace than Macs, something is definitely amiss in the computing world.
It appears that Apple is selling an estimated 200,000 iPads per week compared to “only” 110,000 Macs. Today Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, reports that iPad sales now only behind those of the iPhone 3GS in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2010.
According to Abramsky, "Retail store checks in mid-May show widespread iPad stockouts at Apple retail stores and Best Buy. (More than 25 percent) of Apple stores have only selected Wi-Fi iPads (3G sold out) and are allocating to waiting lists)."
When it comes to international orders, Abramsky suggests Apple has pre-sold about 600,000 units in the 9 countries slated for the May 28 international release, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Span, Switzerland and the U.K.
Extrapolating his current statistics, Abramsky indicates Apple will sell 8 million iPads in 2010, 3 million more than his previous prediction of 5 million 3 months prior. Further, the analyst believes the iPad will result in 25 percent cannibalization, but increase revenue to $59.7 billion, and $13.40 earnings per share (up from $58.3 billion and $13.06) in Apple's 2010 fiscal year, while reiterated his price target of $350 for Apple’s stock.
Supplies remain low, if non-existent for iPads and Apple branded accessories in the Dallas area. After placing calls to 4 Apple stores in the Dallas area, Southlake, Northpark, Willow Bend, and the Knox Henderson locations, we discovered 3G iPads were nearly completely sold out, WiFi models were scarce and the much-coveted camera connection kit was unavailable at all locations.

Is this really surprise? I got rid of my MacBook and replaced it with an iPad 3G 64GB. I have no regrets. I still have my iMac for intensive computing, but the iPad has been great for everything under that - what I mean is that I was already starting to feel like my MB was overkill for what I was lugging it around for, enter iPad. I will say that getting used to cloud computing versus saving things to a flash drive or rapidly dying CD/DVD has taken some getting used to, but it works!
Once multitasking is out in OS4 I really don't see a need for laptops unless one uses them for their desktop.
