Breaking News: Runaway helium balloon is down and empty


6 Year boy inside runaway helium balloon ?

An unidentified person grabbed the tether line as the balloon  was descending close to the surface.

 

A 6 year old boy was believed to be inside a runaway balloon that was flying at  an average  of 8000 ft. Northeast of Denver. There was a Black Hawk Helicopter on its way to perform some type of rescue.The boy's father is a retired storm chaser and was performing hover maneuvers with his older son when its believed that the 6 year got in the balloon and it became detached from it moorings.

    If we can find out the dimensions of the balloon, and confirm it was filled with helium, we can calculate with relative certainty whether or not this balloon can lift a 50-60lb child along with the estimated weight of the balloon. My initial calculations (which are very rough) would conclude that this balloon would be able to lift around 80 pounds at this altitude above sea level. An with an estimation that this balloon might weigh 50lbs, it would have to be a small <30lb 6 year old to allow this thing off the ground.
