On Thursday July 30th, a rare severe weather outbreak unfolded across the state of Mississippi, with widespread reports of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
It was not the fact that there was widespread damaging winds, that made this a rare severe weather event across the state.
Damaging winds are the primary severe weather threat in the month of July.
It was the fact there were tornadoes in the state of Mississippi, during this severe weather event.
Two tornadoes were confirmed in Northwest Mississippi.
An EF 2 tornado, with winds as high as 115 mph, tore through College Park and College Crossing neighborhoods in Olive Branch, damaging over 100 homes, and destroying 6 others. Fortunately, noone was injured during this tornado.

A resident captured ominious dark clouds moving into a Olive Branch neighborhood, associated with the approaching severe thunderstorm.
Oddly enough, just 2 months ago, an EF 2 tornado touched down a mile in a half southeast of where this tornado hit, downing numerous trees and powerlines, and severely damaging 15 to 20 homes, on June 12th.
The second tornado confirmed was long-lived, tracking 32.1 miles, from Phillips County, Arkansas, across state lines into Coahoma County, Mississippi. An estimated, one thousand trees were blown down and uprooted as the storm crossed the White River National Wildlife Refuge, damaging hunting cabins and producing structural damage in Burke Landing.

Tornadoes are very rare in the state, during the month of July.
It is the least active month for tornadoes, with only 28 confirmations since 1950. (this excludes the 2 tornadoes in July 2009)

Over the last 9 years or since 2000, there were only 6 reports of tornadoes during the month of July (1 tornado report in July 2007 and 5 tornado reports in July 2000)
The Olive Branch tornado was only the fourth rated EF2/F2 to touchdown in the state in July, since 1950.
