Texas is now the 9th state to record at least 1 lightning death this year along with Missouri, Connecticut, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, Colorado, Louisiana and Wyoming.  North Carolina leads the nation with 2 recorded lightning fatalities.

This is the most dangerous time of year for lightning strikes.  The months of June, July and August account for over 80 percent of the lightning fatalities per year with July as the peak month for lightning related fatalities historically.

It is extremely important that everyone review lightning safety tips and know what to do if thunderstorms threaten or develop over your area.

You must remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

Lightning Safety Awareness Week continues through June 26th.
