Landfalling major hurricanes more common in Mississippi

Radar loop as Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the MS/LA Gulf Coast August 2005

Mississippi along with several other Gulf Coast States have experienced many hurricanes of various intensities over the years, but more major hurricanes have targeted the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Since 1900, forty major hurricanes have crossed the Gulf Coast, from Texas to the Florida Panhandle.

A total of 16 hurricanes have struck the coast of Mississippi, 9 out of the 16 have been of major hurricane strength. (Categories 3-5)

Eight of those major hurricanes were category 3 storms. One was rated a category 5 storm.

Mississippi's Coast was impacted by the only category 5 hurricane to ever make landfall on the Gulf Coast Region.

That storm is known as Hurricane Camille, which struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast in August  of 1969.

In a matter of fact, 2 out of the 3 most devastating tropical systems to ever impact the Gulf Coast over the last 105 years, struck the coast of Mississippi. (Hurricane Camille of 1969 and Hurricane Katrina of 2005)

(The 1900 Galveston Hurricane was the worst human disaster in American History, with the loss of 6,000 lives)

I was 17, married with a child living in Long Beach. Technology was not as advanced as it is today.I was working that summer after graduating high school and workin at a pre-stress concrete company in Pass Chrisitan. That was 40 years ago this August 17th. No one said this storm was as big as it was,of course, no one knew. My family faired the storm. I relive that night every year. I am so blessed God allowed me to live this extra 40 yrs. Many of my school friends did not.
