It should seem obvious to all that temperatures are on a downward swing in Texas, what with the frost line expected to get as far south as a US 84 line on early Wednesday morning. Moderation of the cool air mass is already underway, however, and Thursday morning will not be nearly as cold with the lowest temperatures within a few degrees of 50 F.

But warming on Thursday will be accompanied by increasing cloudiness, as a storm sequence now over the northern Pacific Ocean transfers its energy to a new low over the western Gulf of Mexico. Just how much rain Texas, and Houston in particular, is somewhat of a question mark. With a strong subtropical jet stream in play, locations to the immediate south and west look to receive up to 5 inches of moisture. This means that those of you living in Freeport, Galveston and Anahuac stand to see major flooding. Otherwise, The worst the metro area stands to get is a raw, cloudy, rainy day.

What follows is a pattern that can best be described with adjectives like "active", "stormy", "variable" and (ultimately) "colder". The numerical models are converging on the formation of a major storm over the TX/OK Panhandle Region next Monday. This system could be a flashpoint for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. More importantly, the low may give rise to an even stronger disturbance affecting the central and eastern portions of the U.S. on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Can you spell "major travel fiasco"? Following the passage of the low will be blast of cold polar air that will get the "holiday spirit" flowing in locations east of the Rocky Mountains.

What's the matter? Don't you like "cold and snow" when you go back home to visit friends and family?
