After nearly two and a half months of unrelenting high heat and little precipitation, Houston is moving beyond "semi-desert" conditions to maybe something akin to "Death Valley Junior". Of course I am kidding, but our inability to escape the searing summer sun is remarkable. Temperatures in northern Texas, after all, have been close to seasonal normal or below, with adequate rain from thunderstorms. But even the folks in Dallas (and for that matter Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and Des Moines later this week) will soon experience the rebirth of the dreaded "heat ridge from Hell", which will be expanding and sliding (albeit temporarily) into the Great Smokies position. The climatology on such a subtropical high features dense smog, continuous afternoon highs near or above 100 degrees, and virtually no rain between the Rocky Mountains and Appalachia. Only some parts of the Upper Midwest and Northeast are going to miss out on this scorcher!

The tropics are showing a few signs of activity, mainly on both side of the Pacific Basin. Over the equatorial Atlantic Ocean, the ITCZ is showing signs of convective circulations. But again, the presence of shearing winds aloft, a vast supply of Saharan dust and hot, dry air, and the vastness of the conjoined heat ridge complex would seem to suggest that anything which would develop would almost certainly bother the Caribbean coastline from Suriname into Belize. A TUTT signature near Bermuda could also transform into a tropical low (the 18z GFS model run suggests such a possibility), but the threat from such a system would mainly be to shipping interests.

And we cannot forget our heat ridge, which I think will retrogress from Georgia to near Texarkana during the medium range. With time, a strong low and cold front from the West Coast will ride over the ridge, re-establishing severe weather threats and occasional cool intrusions for the Great Lakes and Eastern Seaboard. Our lower atmosphere will become very moist, which may knock off a few degrees from the air temperature.

Of course, it will still feel miserable in Houston and environs through the next two weeks. With no real rain to speak of.

Do you mind my asking what computer graphics publishing software you use to get those maps and annotations posted here, I am new to web publishing and dont know how to do it.

I use Paint.Net, which is great for a Windows platform and relatively easy top learn (www.getpaint.net/download.html).

The images I get from various sources are modified via this program, so banners, backgrounds and symbols can be inserted and clarified.

    Best Regards,
