Regional weather networks like the Rocky Mountain
Weather Network provide real time weather close to home.
A global network of personal weather stations is documenting weather conditions across the globe and much closer to home where you live. Watching the nightly news or checking one of the major weather websites is fine if you want to know about the weather at an airport or downtown area. But, what if that isn’t where you live? What about places like here in Denver where the weather can vary greatly from one end of town to the next? It could be snowing in Centennial and yet sunny in Thornton!
Launched just last year, these regional (and national) weather networks are fed data from over 500 personal weather stations as a service to the public. Owned and operated by citizens with an interest in the weather, the stations provide local and live weather conditions from small towns to big cities. Even the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration use data from these stations to aid in their forecasting and climate analysis.

Weather stations on the networks document the
harshest weather conditions like the severe cold that
the Midwest and northeast have seen recently.
Last year stations in the Rocky Mountain Network and Plains Weather Network documented the near record tornado season providing real time conditions to those most affected by the twisters. Stations in the Southeastern Weather Network provided critical information as Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Hanna devastated the region. More recently the Northwest Weather Network documented the record winter storms that struck the Pacific Northwest. Right now, stations in the Midwestern, Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern networks are showing the record setting cold that is crippling that portion of the country.
International? No problem! International network from Africa to Scotland to Australia are available!
Close to home the Rocky Mountain Weather Network has stations from Powell, Wyoming to dozens of stations along the Front Range and on to Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Be sure to check out these networks and their member stations. When you visit one of the networks you can visit the station closest to your area of interest just by clicking on it. If you like and appreciate the service they provide, be sure to let them know!
