Thus far the Mile High City has enjoyed unseasonably warm temperatures with little precipitation for much of the month. That changes today but only for a short period of time as the longer term forecast calls for a return to warm and dry conditions.
Denver’s average temperature for the month so far is 35.5 degrees which is a healthy 4.7 degrees above normal. We also average 7.0 inches of snow per month but have recorded only 4.6 inches so far this month.
In looking at the forecast, despite today’s cold temperatures and the chance for some light snowfall, it appears January will definitely go into the books as warmer and drier than normal.
For today, a cold front is moving through the state this morning and that is going to serve to hold temperatures down. Denver will see a high of only around 37 degrees today with overnight lows dropping to around 15 degrees.
In terms of snowfall, there simply is not much moisture to work with. Scattered snow showers are expected to develop through the morning but accumulations – if any – will generally be below a half of an inch. Douglas and western Elbert Counties stand the best chance.
Up in the high country, snow is expected to be much more widespread and the avalanche danger remains high. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through this evening for much of the mountain areas west of the Continental Divide where 6 to 12 inches will have fallen by the time the storm system moves out.
The weekend ahead begins a warm up that will see normal temperatures on Saturday followed by a downright mild day on Sunday. Look for highs of 44 degrees Saturday, 57 degrees on Sunday. Both days will feature plenty of sun.
Heading into the next workweek, there will be some minor disturbances moving through but none that will have much of an impact. Overall, calm and dry conditions are expected. Be sure to check out the slideshow to the left for the extended outlook.
