Hurricane "Danielle" is the 1st major hurricane in the Atlantic Basin in 2010. It is a Category 4 storm with winds of 135mph. Fortunately, it is expected to remain over the open seas as it accelerates northward and weakens late this weekend.
Tropical Storm "earl" formed earlier this week off of the Cape Verde Islands (west coast of Africa). It has been struggling as a weak tropical storm (sustained winds 45mph) but National Hurricane Center (NHC) projections bring it to hurricane status over the weekend as it plods westward. It is likely to miss the eastern Caribbean Islands such as St. Kits, but will be somewhat of a close call is it too begins to be pulled northward by mid-level steering winds.
Now, a 3rd potential system is taking shape. The NHC says there is a "70% chance" the area shown in the attached photo, just off the coast of Africa, will become a tropical depression or storm over the weekend.
If it attains a closed circulation and surface winds of 39mph or more, its name would be "Fiona" Shrek was not available for comment.
